Goodbye to god

In Your Bones, Poem 13

“Goodbye to the storefront; the facade and the masquerade…”

The inspiration for this poem…

Anytime someone tries to play god/God in your life you should question it, but when you are a child you are often not able to do so. You have to come to an understanding first, and then find a way to say let go and live what you believe. For me that came in the form of first recognizing the falsity that was handed to me, then finding the strength and ability to walk away. Once I made that leap I had to sink myself into saying good-bye to what should have sustained me and find another source of well-being. This was no small feat. It is one of the most courageous things a person can do. It is a high and holy endeavor no matter what. This poem was read as part of throwing my father’s ashes into the sea. It was windy and they blew back in our faces, and then were gone. We sat in a circle and passed around a beer. While this might not seem like much of a celebration, it was a benchmark occasion that marked the end of one era and the start of a new one. It was a bubble-smashing day.

Writing/Meditation Prompts:

  • How have you been tricked, duped, or betrayed? How did you handle it (or how do you need to)?

  • Have you ever had to create your own celebration? For something someone else might not ever understand??

  • What is a ground-breaking, barn-raising, ribbon cutting, bubble-smashing day for you? Draw it out with color (and glitter?).

  • We all have to figure out what we are going to believe in, and that can come in the form of what we do NOT believe in. How did you come by your beliefs/disbeliefs and how have they helped or inhibited you?

  • Have you ever had to say good-bye and start all over? How did you survive, or thrive?

  • Who needs to share in your story or hear it for the first time??
