Tiny Lights, Poem 3
“…your body doesn’t wait to hold you but doesn’t need to be unnecessarily noticed because it’s too busy keeping your heart beating while making music of your breath.”
The inspiration for this poem…
This was the first of my body poems that began to express my fascination with how much our bodies know about healing. These poems were attune to the recognition that the pain I was carrying in my psyche was also present in my body. However, in Tiny Lights there is an evolution of understanding that my psyche also has an amazing capacity to heal, just as my body does. There is a greater appreciation for how attentive our bodies are to our needs, both physical, psychological, and spiritual (soulful). This poem speaks to becoming fully present to my body from a place of amazement and admiration. There is much to be grateful for within our bodies and if we can be present to them we are really there. That is being present in the best possible way.
Writing/Meditation Prompts:
Breathe and be fully present in your body. Feel your feet on the floor and move up through all of it to the top of your head. Do you stop and pause anywhere and want to linger? What deserves more attention (or less) in this moment?
What do you think of this body of yours? What hurts and what doesn’t? What do you want to say to your body (or about it) at this moment?
Do you have any promises you need to make to your body (or body part)? Are there promises you’ve broken? How can you make amends with your body and start moving together in the right direction??
Write a body poem. Address a letter to a part that needs to hear from you! Share your writing with your body (or body part).
